“Today, on World Press Freedom Day, Centrist Party of Canada would like to acknowledge the invaluable role that journalists play in providing us clear and honest information in Canada and around the world. Free and responsible journalism is an integral element of every democratic system. Centrist Canadians honor all those journalists who lost their lives in writing about the dictatorial policies of authoritarian and so-called democratic government in many countries.
The theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day is “Information as a Public Good”. The role of honest journalists has become even more important globally in fighting misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has shown us how access to information, which is reliable, fact-based and transparent, is essential to keep our communities safe.
In Canada, while all political leaders have done nothing practical, many journalists have been exposing the discriminatory laws with inherent racism imposed by Quebec government on its own citizens by legislating Quebec Bill 21. These brave journalists continue to keep those in power in check, challenge the hypocrisy and double standard of these fake leaders and help build a society based on equality. Values of justice, fairness and honesty are basic principles of journalism.
We also acknowledge the work of journalists who have been fighting the misinformation spread for political gain against the natural resources of Canada. Clear and truthful information based upon facts is necessary to fight the false rhetoric of some political parties and special interest groups for against natural resources of Canada.
Centrist Canadians thank all journalists everywhere who work day and night to provide us fact based information and contribute to our communities by helping Canadians lead better lives. Centrist Party of Canada will always stand up to support free, honest and responsible journalism.
